Do you want to know how to use the number of the day in your classroom? The Number of the Day activities encourage mathematical thinking, builds number sense and establishes routines. You can create a template for students to use each day as you change out the number of the day. Have them practice showing the number is base ten blocks, expanded form, and on a place value chart. This simple activity will help to strengthen students’ number sense tremendously! 

How to use the number of the day

  1. Choose a new number each day.
  2. Determine what math activities you want to incorporate around the number.
  • Have students solve addition or subtraction problems involving this number
  • Build the number using base ten blocks
  • Compare the number with other numbers
  • Write the number using words 

Always make sure you run through each activity you want students to do a few times before they are completing a number of the day exercise on their own.

3. Take time to review the number of the day activity as a whole group after students have all completed it.

A great option for establishing routines in your classroom is by implementing the number of the day. By incorporating the number of the day into your daily math routine, you’ll improve students number sense and give them an activity they feel confident completing each day.
