If you have ever stood in front of a room full of students, desperately trying to get their attention- then attention getters or classroom callbacks are for you! These clever attention getting strategies are the perfect way to get students back on task and ready to listen.

You may be familiar with certain attention getters or have used classroom callbacks before, but incase you haven’t, I’ll explain. The teacher says one phrase and then the class immediately stops what they are doing and will usually call back another phrase to him or her.

And let me tell you, they can work magic.

This classroom management technique works like a charm because, well, it’s just a lot of fun. When taught correctly, students feel confident because they know exactly what to do and what to expect afterwards.

How to Start Using these in your classroom

The best way to begin classroom callbacks with your students is to model, model, model. Model so much so that when they hear the particular phrase, they stop what they are doing without even having to think about it. When practicing, I like to go through the routine multiple times. It may look something like this:

  1. Tell students about the classroom callbacks. Rehearse what I’ll say and what they will say in response. Make sure they know that when they hear me say the phrase, they freeze and respond.

For Example say: ” When you hear me say “Class, Class” you’ll freeze and say, “Yes, Yes.”

2. Have students get to work on something, talk with each other, or walk around the classroom.

3.  After a minute of so, call out the phrase to students and wait for them to freeze and respond.

Why Use ATTENTION getters or Classroom Callbacks?

Nothing is worse that trying to get a group of students attention with no luck. The fact that students usually find classroom callbacks fun makes doing what is normally a dreaded task, fun and easy. They save time with how quickly they can reel students back in and create a sense of classroom community because it’s a special routine that you all share. I highly recommend giving callbacks a try with your students soon!
