Teach 3 Digit Addition With Regrouping
I love to teach addition with regrouping! No, you didn’t read that wrong. Even though regrouping can often be a difficult skill for some students to master, there are multiple strategies for them to use. I like to teach all of the strategies and then allow students the opportunity to choose which strategy works best for them. Today I’ll share with you how to teach 3-digit addition with regrouping to your students.
1.EXPANDED FORM AND PLACE VALUE TO TEACH 3-DIGIT ADDITION WTH REGROUPING
It’s important for students to have a solid understanding of what is actually happening when they are adding 3-digit numbers with regrouping. By using expanded form to add, students are reminded of the values of each of the numbers in the equation. For some students, seeing the numbers stretched out may make it easier to understand when they go to add them up.
If you aren’t familiar with using the expanded form strategy to add 3-digit numbers, here it is in a nutshell:
Using the equation: 576 + 352
- First, write each number in expanded form. (500+70+6, 300+50+2)
- Next, begin with the ones. Add them together. In this case, no regrouping is required in the one’s place so there are 8 ones.
- Then, move to the tens. 70 + 50= 120, so we must regroup and we are left with 20 tens.
Finally, add up the hundreds. The initial 500 + 300 we had equals 800, then we must add the additional hundred making it 900. After converting it into standard form the final answer is 928.
2.REGROUPING USING BASE-TEN Blocks
Using base-ten blocks to teach 3-digit addition with regrouping works so well. This method allows students to visualize each number using the base-ten blocks and then manipulate them however the equation calls for. Using base-ten blocks when regrouping gives students the opportunity to trade out ten ones for one ten or ten tens for a hundred, so they are able to actually see what is happening when they regroup.
You can provide students with a place value mat like the one above to support them as they use base ten blocks to solve 3-digit addition equations with regrouping.
It is very important when introducing base-ten blocks, to spend some time reviewing the value of each block. (The ones, tens and hundreds.) Some students may see a single ten rod and say it’s value is one and not ten. Having an anchor chart visible for students who may find this confusing can be helpful.
3. 3-Digit Addition Using open number line
An open number line is another visual tool that allows students to put their thinking onto paper as they solve mathematical equations. Don’t know how to use an open number line with your students? It’s simple!
- Let’s use the equation 456 + 124 for example.
- Since we are adding we’ll start by writing the biggest number, 456, on the left side of the number line.
- We are adding the number 124, so we’ll need to make that many “jumps” of hundreds, tens and ones to the right of the number line. We’ll need one large “jump” of 100, two “jumps” of 10 and four “jumps” of 1.
- Last, determine the answer to the equation by what number you’ve reached after the “jumps” you made.
Using an open number line to add 3-digit numbers causes students to use critical thinking skills as they determine the number of “jumps” that must be made using the hundreds, tens and ones. Open number lines also help students check their answers. By going back and counting the amount of “jumps” they made and making sure the ones, tens and hundreds match up with the number in the equation, students can easily see where they may have made an error when solving the problem.
