The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree
I love this Christmas book by Gloria Houston. If you haven’t read it, it’s about a young girl , Ruthie, and her mother who are determined to find a way to bring the perfect Christmas tree to the village church for the annual celebration. Ruthie’s father, Papa, has gone off to war and they aren’t sure he’ll return in time to cut down the tree that was selected earlier in the year. 
Another reason I love this book is that there are so many great opportunities to reinforce ELA skills using this book as the mentor text! I truly believe the book will engage you students and that is so important when they’re practicing comprehension. It’s a lot easier to comprehend something that catches your interest, right?
I’ve created a few resources that are the perfect addition to this book and you can use with your students to practice things like the 5 W’s (Who, What, When, Where, Why and How) , Writing and Sequencing.
These comprehension questions come in both short answer response and multiple choice so they are perfect if you need to differentiate with your students!
