Fall Lesson Plans
I love teaching during the fall, but the same things that can make fall a lot of fun in the classroom, can also make lesson planning overwhelming! That’s why, in this post, I want to share one week of fall lesson plans that I hope will help you as you are planning to teach during the fall months. Feel free to use all or some of them to create a set of lesson plans that work for you!
These week long fall themed plans and activities are full of meaningful, autumn themed activities that I really believe your students will love! From writing and science activities to math and reading comprehension, each day is full of review your students will benefit from.
While looking through the fall activities I’ve shared, keep in mind you can add or take away whatever you need to. Already have your week planned out for the most part? Use these fall activities to pull from when you find you have more time left than you do lesson and you need some more fall activities to pull from!
Fall Activities for Reading
My main focus was summarizing for this week of fall lesson plans. Summarizing is so important all year long, so I wanted to make sure and share a few resources you can use in the fall.
Monday: I love teaching summarizing using the 5 W’s because I feel it really helps students begin to grasp what to summarize means. Students will practice summarizing the nonfiction passage Pumpkins, followed by answering the 5 W’s questions based on the passage.
Tuesday: Students will practice summarizing again, but with the fiction passage Visiting a Pumpkin Patch and Apple Picking. I like having several similar passages and questions so that we can complete one as a whole group and then students can complete the second independently.
Wednesday: I’ve linked the resource containing the nonfiction passage Why do leaves change colors? Nonfiction is always a win because you’re usually mixing important social studies or science content in with reading. After reading this passage, students can practice finding evidence from the text to answer the comprehension questions about the passage.
Thursday: After practicing summarizing the first few days of the week, now it’s time for a summarizing game! Students will go around the game board, taking turns reading a short fall themed passage and summarizing what they’ve read. Student answers will either be a one sentence summary or a multiple choice answer. You can most definitely also use the task cards without the game board if need be.

Friday: Today pick a (fall) read aloud of your choice or have students use a book they’ve read. Students will retell the story, writing the important pieces on each of the leaves using the S.W.B.S.T. method.Fall Writing Activities
Monday: Students will begin by completing a descriptive writing about fall. In the prompt, they are encouraged to think with their senses and focus on the sights, sounds, and smells of fall. I encourage you to give students some time to brainstorm what this may look like on a simple bubble map drawn out.
Tuesday: Before students begin working on their informative writing How to Carve a Pumpkin, you may want to brainstorm as a whole group what the steps are. Maybe even watch a short, kid-friendly video that shows each step. Then have students put in their own words, the steps to carve a pumpkin.
Wednesday: For a change of pace, on Wednesday students can complete an acrostic poem about Autumn. These are perfect to have students decorate afterwards and then hang up around your classroom!
Thursday: Opinion writing! In my experience, students always love opinion writing. On the plans for today, students will share their opinions about fall. Encourage students to think about things like the weather, the food, the activities, the holidays…not just one piece.
Friday: Another opportunity to bring science into writing, students will write an informative piece on the life cycle of a pumpkin. If you’ve went through a pumpkins life cycle during previous days or used the Pumpkin Life Cycle Resource, your students will have plenty of knowledge to write about this!
Fall Math Activities
I wanted to share math activities that you could easily incorporate into your classroom, so I’ve included mainly addition and subtraction activities with a fall theme. If your schedule is already packed with what you need to teach for math in the fall, these activities are easily able to be used for things like math centers and early finishers.
Monday:The first set of math activities I wanted to share for this week are a few fall themed, place value worksheets that you can find inside of my Fall Math and Reading No Prep Pack. The first keeps it simple, where students will determine the amount of hundreds, tens, and ones in a number. The second, has students putting each number in expanded form. You’ll find both 2 digit and 3 digit number options for these worksheets if you need to differentiate in your classroom!
Tuesday: For Tuesday and Wednesday, I’ve shared plans for 2 digit addition and subtraction practice – but with a fall theme! The first activity would be basic addition practice followed by a student favorite which is the math riddle activities! These activities don’t just have to be for your whole group lesson, but can also be used for math centers, morning work or early finishers.
2 digit subtraction fall riddle activity.
Wednesday: For Wednesday, I’ve shared 2 digit subtraction practice and the same setup as Tuesday. Students will practice the 2 digit subtraction problems fall worksheet, then complete theA FREEBIE FOR YOU! Students can get up and moving to complete these addition and subtraction word problem task cards. They’ll be working through the same types of 2 digit addition and subtraction problems that they’ve practiced during the week so far. Again, if this doesn’t fit with your whole group but you want incorporate these fall math lessons into your classroom, use them during centers or another time you can fit them in!
Thursday:Fall Sub Plan Packet along with a ton of other fall themed activities that are no prep for you.
Friday: A math game that reviews word problems and skip counting! You can find this resource inside of myFall science Activities
This week in science is all about the life cycle of a pumpkin! With the Life Cycle of a Pumpkin resource, students are able to learn about each stage after reading a short passage. Then, reflect on what they’ve learned by answering the comprehension questions included.
Monday: The first day students will read all about the seed stage in a pumpkins life cycle.
Tuesday: Following learning about the seed stage, students will learn about the sprout stage.
Wednesday: On Wednesday, students will read about the vine stage in a pumpkins life cycle and answer the comprehension questions that accompany it.
Thursday: Students will learn about the flowering stage.
Friday: Finally, students will read about the final stage, the pumpkin formation stage in a pumpkins life cycle.
You’ll also find a few more activities to reinforce the life cycle of a pumpkin that you can carry over to another week or have students complete after reading about each stage in the life cycle.
